L’Oréal, a global leader in the beauty industry, is pioneering the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to enhance the sustainability of its cosmetic products. In collaboration with IBM, the company is developing a bespoke AI foundation model aimed at revolutionizing cosmetic formulations by utilizing renewable raw materials, thereby reducing energy consumption and material waste.
Innovating Cosmetic Formulation with AI
This initiative marks the cosmetics industry's first formulation-focused AI model, combining L’Oréal’s extensive expertise in cosmetic science with IBM’s advanced AI technologies. The custom AI model is designed to process vast datasets of cosmetic formulas and raw material components, facilitating the creation of new products, reformulation of existing ones, and optimization for large-scale production.
Stéphane Ortiz, Head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development at L’Oréal Research & Innovation, stated:
“As part of our Digital Transformation Program, this partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalization.”
Advancing Sustainability Goals
The collaboration aligns with L’Oréal’s commitment to its "L’Oréal for the Future" program, which aims to ensure that by 2030, the majority of its product formulas are derived from bio-sourced materials or developed within a circular economy framework. By leveraging AI, L’Oréal seeks to enhance its research and innovation capabilities, enabling the development of eco-friendly products that meet diverse consumer needs across various regions.
AI at the Intersection of Beauty and Technology
Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow and Vice President for Europe and Africa, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:
“This collaboration is a truly impactful application of generative AI, leveraging the power of technology and expertise for the good of the planet.”
By integrating AI into its formulation processes, L’Oréal is set to accelerate innovation, reduce environmental impact, and continue its legacy of delivering high-quality, sustainable beauty products to consumers worldwide.
