India’s Ambitious AI Mission: Government Launches Strategic Portals to Accelerate Artificial Intelligence Development
In a significant move to position India as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), the Indian government has launched several key initiatives aimed at fostering AI development and integration across various sectors. These efforts are part of the broader "IndiaAI Mission," a comprehensive national strategy designed to harness the potential of AI for economic growth and societal benefit.
Central to this mission is the establishment of dedicated platforms such as INDIAai and Bhashini, which serve as pivotal components in the country's AI ecosystem. INDIAai, launched in May 2020, functions as the National AI Portal, providing resources, news, and information related to AI developments in India. Bhashini, introduced in August 2022, focuses on breaking language barriers by offering translation services across various Indian languages, thereby promoting digital inclusion.

INDIAai: The National AI Portal
INDIAai was inaugurated to serve as a one-stop platform for all AI-related developments within the country. Jointly initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), and the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), the portal offers a wealth of resources including articles, news updates, research reports, and educational materials related to AI.
The portal aims to democratize access to AI information and resources, catering to a diverse audience ranging from industry professionals and researchers to students and policymakers. By providing a centralized repository of AI knowledge, INDIAai seeks to facilitate collaboration, innovation, and the dissemination of best practices in the field of artificial intelligence.
Bhashini: Bridging Language Barriers with AI
Launched under the National Language Translation Mission, Bhashini is an AI-driven platform developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Its primary objective is to enable real-time translation and communication across various Indian languages, thus reducing linguistic barriers and promoting inclusivity in the digital space.
Bhashini leverages natural language processing and AI technologies to provide translation services, ensuring that citizens can access digital content and services in their native languages. This initiative is particularly significant in a linguistically diverse country like India, where effective communication across different language speakers is essential for socio-economic development.
BharatGen: India's Indigenous AI Model
In addition to these platforms, the Indian government has introduced BharatGen, an open-source, multimodal, multilingual AI model tailored to the country's unique linguistic and cultural diversity. Launched in September 2024, BharatGen aims to reduce reliance on foreign AI models by developing indigenous solutions that cater to India's specific needs.
Supported by the Department of Science and Technology, BharatGen focuses on creating AI models that understand and process the nuances of India's numerous languages and dialects. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to building AI infrastructure that is both locally relevant and globally competitive.
Government's Strategic Investment in AI
The Indian government's commitment to AI is further evidenced by the approval of the IndiaAI Mission, a comprehensive national-level initiative with a budget outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore. This mission aims to foster an ecosystem conducive to AI development across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and education.
By investing in AI infrastructure and supporting startups, the government seeks to harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence to drive economic growth and address societal challenges.
The launch of strategic portals like INDIAai and Bhashini, along with initiatives such as BharatGen and the IndiaAI Mission, reflects the Indian government's proactive approach to embracing artificial intelligence. These efforts are poised to position India as a key player in the global AI landscape, fostering innovation, enhancing digital inclusion, and driving economic development.
